Labiaplasty

At Wave Plastic Surgery

Labiaplasty in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Francisco

Some women are dissatisfied with the appearance of their vaginal area.  This may cause them to feel self-conscious and experience discomfort.  A labiaplasty involves surgically trimming the labial tissue to create a more compact appearance.  At Wave surgical techniques are used to achieve a more balanced labia and toned vaginal structure. Women report feeling more confident and comfortable after their vaginal rejuvenation procedure.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is becoming increasingly popular among women who want to improve the appearance and function of their labia. The labia are the folds of skin that surround the vaginal opening, and they come in many different shapes and sizes. While there is no “normal” or “ideal” size for the labia, some women may experience discomfort or self-consciousness due to their size or shape. Labiaplasty can help to reduce or reshape the labia, improving both appearance and function.

Labiaplasty is the reconstruction of the Labial tissues. If the tissues such as the Labia Minora or the Labia Majora are too large, become painful during athletics due to rubbing, or are disfigured from prior surgical procedures (such as an episiotomy), these tissues can be repaired with a cosmetic procedure that has excellent results both functionally and cosmetically.

In a labial reconstruction surgery, the excess labial tissue is removed, and the incisions are closed with fine sutures in a plastic repair. After recovery, the labia will appear normal but smaller. Post-operative pain is minimal, and recovery is approximately 7- 10 days

Good Candidates for Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a personal decision that should be made after careful consideration and discussion with a qualified plastic surgeon. Some women may be good candidates for the procedure if they:

How is Vaginal Rejuvenation Performed?

Vaginal rejuvenation is performed in-office with the use of local or general anesthesia for your comfort. During vaginal rejuvenation, the following techniques may be used:

A labiaplasty is a technique used to address the length of the labia minora. During a labiaplasty procedure, excess tissue is surgically removed from the labia to improve their size, shape, and symmetry.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

During a clitoral hood reduction, excess skin is removed from above the clitoris. This procedure can be performed for aesthetic reasons, or to enhance sensation.

Pubic Reduction

During a pubic reduction, the fatty tissue on the pubic area is reduced using surgical techniques. At the same time, a lift can be performed to address any sagging in the pubic area.

The Labiaplasty Process

Labiaplasty is typically an outpatient that is done under general anesthesia. During the procedure, our plastic surgeon will carefully remove or reshape the excess tissue of the labia, creating a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The procedure can take anywhere from one to two hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.

Here’s what to expect from the procedure.

Preoperative Evaluation

A preoperative evaluation is required prior to all surgical procedures.  This involves a complete Medical history and Physical exam. A number of issues will be determined at that time. These include the degree of prior labial trauma and the type of repair required to achieve the desired results. This is a plastic repair resulting in the labia appearing entirely normal, with Virtually no visible scarring.

Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery, the patient will arrive at the Surgical Center approximately one hour prior to their scheduled procedure.  Our Board Certified Anesthesiologists will discuss the types of anesthesia available and if the patient has any allergies. An IV will be started, and once the patient is under anesthesia, they will be taken to the operating room.

Recovery & Post-Operative Care

Following surgery, the patient will be monitored for about one to one and a half hours.  There will be no bandages to change or tubes in the bladder.  Pain medication will be given in the recovery room if needed. However, this is not typically necessary immediately after surgery as the surgeon will the patient pain medication prior to them waking up from Anesthesia.

At discharge, non-narcotic oral pain medication is given to the patient.  Patients typically have no problems urinating after the procedure.  If the patient begins their menstrual cycle, tampons should be avoided until approximately 3-4 weeks after surgery.

We recommend daily showering. However, taking baths should be avoided for about two weeks.  Full sexual function may be resumed approximately 3-4 weeks after the surgery

Frequently Asked Questions About Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the labia minora or majora, the folds of skin surrounding the female genitalia. The goal of the procedure is to improve the appearance of the labia or reduce discomfort.

A good candidate for labiaplasty is someone who is bothered by the appearance of their labia or experiences physical discomfort, such as chafing or pain during activities such as exercise or sexual intercourse. It’s important for candidates to have realistic expectations and understand the risks and benefits of the procedure.

Labiaplasty can be performed using a variety of techniques, but generally involves removing excess tissue from the labia and reshaping the remaining tissue. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

Recovery time varies depending on the individual and the extent of the surgery, but generally involves avoiding strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for several weeks. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort during the healing process.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with labiaplasty, including bleeding, infection, scarring, and changes in sensation. It’s important to discuss these risks with your surgeon and make an informed decision about whether the procedure is right for you.

Labiaplasty generally does not affect sexual sensation, as the procedure is focused on reshaping the labia and does not involve the clitoris or other sensitive areas.

Recovery time varies from woman to woman, but most women can return to their normal activities within a few days to a week after the procedure. It is recommended to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for a few weeks after the procedure to allow the incisions to heal properly.

The results of labiaplasty are generally long-lasting, but can be affected by factors such as aging, weight changes, and pregnancy.

In most cases, labiaplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance. However, if the surgery is being performed to alleviate physical discomfort, insurance may cover a portion of the cost. It’s important to check with your insurance provider to determine your coverage.
