Hyperbaric
Oxygen Therapy
at WAVE
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is one of the core modalities in our wellness program at Wave Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Laser Center. It is designed to support cellular energy, healing, and overall health optimization, and works synergistically with treatments such as hormone optimization, peptides, and aesthetic procedures.
What Is Hyperbaric
Oxygen Therapy?
In HBOT, you relax inside a sealed chamber where:
- The air pressure is increased above normal atmospheric pressure
- You breathe pure or high-concentration oxygen
Under normal conditions, oxygen is carried mainly by red blood cells. Once the hemoglobin in red blood cells is fully saturated, breathing more oxygen does not significantly increase the oxygen content in the blood.
Inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, however, increased pressure changes how oxygen behaves in the body:
- Gas dissolves more readily into a liquid at higher pressures
- Oxygen dissolves directly into the blood plasma (the fluid part of blood), not only into red blood cells
- This raises the partial pressure and total content of oxygen in blood and tissues, and enhances how far oxygen can diffuse into areas with poor circulation
This enhanced oxygen delivery helps support the brain, circulation, respiratory, digestive, and endocrine systems, boosts cellular activity, and supports the body’s natural recovery processes.

Why Pressure Matters
Not all “oxygen chambers” are the same.
Many consumer or “soft” chambers only reach about 1.0–1.3 ATA (atmospheres of pressure). This level is not considered true medical therapeutic pressure.
Therapeutic HBOT generally requires ≥ 1.5 ATA, with a typical “sweet spot” around 2.0 ATA for wellness applications.
At Wave, we use a 40" D 2.0 ATA multiperson, walk-in hard-shell hyperbaric oxygen chamber, designed for efficient medical-grade HBOT. The system:
- Supports up to 2.0 ATA treatment pressure
- Allows multiple guests in a seated position in a spacious, hard-shell environment
- Provides a comfortable, controlled setting under the supervision of our trained clinical team
This level of pressure, combined with high-concentration oxygen, allows oxygen to dissolve directly into the plasma so that total oxygen delivery to the body can reach up to many times the normal amount described in our internal training.
Key Benefits of
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Enhances Mitochondrial Energy Production
Mitochondria are the “power plants” inside cells that generate ATP, the only form of energy your cells can actually use. Oxygen is essential for efficient ATP production. In a high-pressure, high-oxygen environment:
- Mitochondria receive far more oxygen than under normal conditions
- ATP production increases, especially in high-demand organs like the brain and central nervous system
- Over a series of treatments, HBOT can stimulate mitochondrial function and may encourage the formation of additional mitochondria
This is one reason HBOT is of particular interest for issues related to energy, cognitive function, and age-related decline.
Reduces Inflammation & Swelling
By increasing oxygen levels in under-perfused (poorly supplied) tissues:
- Local ischemia (low blood low/oxygen) is improved
- Inflammatory mediators can be modulated
- Tissue swelling (edema) can be reduced
- Oxygen-dependent repair processes are supported
In clinical medicine, similar mechanisms are used for chronic, difficult-to-heal problems such as diabetic foot ulcers, radiation injuries, and other ischemic or inflammatory conditions. At Wave, we apply the same physiological principles to support:
- Reduced swelling and improved healing after surgery
- etter recovery and less downtime after non-surgical procedures
Stimulates Circulation & Tissue Repair
HBOT at therapeutic pressures has been associated with:
- Angiogenesis – promotion of new blood vessel formation
- Increased blood flow to compromised tissues
- Enhanced collagen and elastin synthesis in the skin
- Support of fibrosis and new tissue growth in healing areas
This makes HBOT a natural complement to procedures that deliberately “stress” tissue to trigger regeneration, such as:
- Microneedling
- Sculptra® (collagen-stimulating injectable)
- Ultherapy® and other collagen-inducing energy treatments
Supports Immune Function
In a hyper-oxygenated state, HBOT can help mobilize key immune cells:
- NK (natural killer) cells, which recognize and clear abnormal cells
- Macrophages, which engulf bacteria, fungi, and cellular debris
Clinically, hyperbaric oxygen has long been used as an adjunct in treating severe infections such as necrotizing fasciitis and chronic wound infections, where improved oxygen delivery and immune activation help the body clear infection more effectively.
In the wellness and aesthetic context, we use HBOT to generally support immune resilience and recovery, not to replace medical treatment for specific diseases.
Cellular & “Healthy Aging” Effects
Longer-term use of HBOT at therapeutic pressures has been associated, in the literature and in clinical experience, with changes at the cellular and genetic-regulation level, including:
- Modulation of gene expression (“epigenetic” effects)
- Effects on mechanisms related to telomere length (a marker associated with cellular aging)
- Increased stem cell production
- Influence on proteins involved in repair and anti-aging pathways
Within the wellness and longevity framework, HBOT is often discussed together with other key “cellular stressors” that can encourage autophagy (clearance of “senescent” or “zombie” cells), such as fasting, nutritional ketosis, and certain other metabolic interventions.
Aesthetic & Wellness Applications at Wave
Based on the mechanisms above, HBOT at Wave is positioned as a supportive therapy for:
Post-surgical recovery
- Helps reduce swelling
- Supports blood flow to areas with compromised circulation
- Aids tissue healing after procedures such as facelifts or other surgeries
Post-procedure recovery (non-surgical)
Many aesthetic treatments work by creating controlled micro-injury or stimulation to trigger regeneration. HBOT can support recovery and results after:
- Microneedling
- Sculptra® or other collagen-stimulating injectables
- Ultherapy® and similar devices
- Other collagen-building treatments
General wellness & health optimization
As part of our wellness program, HBOT sits alongside:
- Bioidentical hormone optimization
- Peptide therapy
- IV therapies such as NAD+ and other nutrient infusions
It is particularly relevant for patients concerned about:
- Low energy or Poor sleep
- Brain fog and cognitive efficiency
- Slower recovery from exertion or stress
Your HBOT Experience at Wave
Session Length & Frequency
There is no single protocol that fits everyone, but common patterns from our training and internal protocols include:
- Session duration: approximately 60 minutes in the chamber
- Frequency: typically 2–3 sessions per week, depending on goals
- Sessions: Around 10 sessions for post-procedure recovery or basic aesthetic maintenance
- Sessions: Approximately 20–40 sessions for deeper wellness, longevity, or more comprehensive health optimization
Your actual plan is tailored based on your goals and our clinician’s assessment.
TREATMENT FLOW
1
Initial Wellness Consultation
- We begin with a detailed consultation focused on your concerns (energy, sleep, cognition, recovery, etc.) and overall health goals.
- HBOT is considered within the broader context of lifestyle (diet, exercise, sleep) and other wellness modalities.
2
EVALUATION & CLEARANCE
- Our clinical team reviews your medical history, current conditions, and any potential contraindications to HBOT.
3
HBOT SESSION
- You are seated comfortably inside the hard-shell chamber.
- The chamber is gradually pressurized to the prescribed level (up to 2.0 ATA) while you breathe high-concentration oxygen.
- You remain inside for about 60 minutes, then the pressure is slowly returned to normal before exiting.
4
SERIES & FOLLOW UP
- Results are cumulative; many patients notice more benefit after several sessions rather than immediately after the first.
- For those doing HBOT as part of a larger wellness plan, we may combine sessions with hormone optimization, peptides, or IV treatments, based on individual assessment.
Who Is a candidate?
HBOT may be considered for:
- Surgical patients seeking faster recovery and reduced swelling
- Non-surgical aesthetic patients wanting to optimize collagen and elastin regeneration
- Wellness patients focusing on energy, sleep, cognition, and overall vitality
During consultation, we also discuss lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and sleep, as these foundations are essential for any wellness intervention to work optimally.
Who Should not Receive HBOT?
According to the material provided for this program:
Absolute contraindications include:
- Untreated pneumothorax
- Severe emphysema
- Active seizure state
Relative considerations include:
- Acute upper respiratory infection with significant nasal congestion or sinus pain (pressure changes can be uncomfortable and may affect sinus and cerebrospinal fluid pressure)
In our internal training, pregnancy and certain pediatric cases, as well as active significant sinus infection, are treated with caution or avoided due to pressure-related concerns.
All patients are screened by our clinical team before starting HBOT, and any existing medical conditions should be discussed in detail with your primary healthcare provider and our staff.
