Aging Upper Eyelid Surgery in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Francisco
Patients seeking a more refreshed, rejuvenated, and natural facial appearance may benefit from an upper blepharoplasty procedure. The eyes are often the first point of facial visual contact. Having poorly defined, loosely shaped eyelids can make one appear tired and older than you may feel. Multiple reasons can cause sagging, loose eyelids to develop, including aging, stretched out skin, or genetic predisposition.
In some cases, weakening of the eye muscle or ptosis can be a contributing factor and may need to be addressed with adjunctive surgical techniques. In addition, heavy eyebrows that have fallen below the correct anatomical location may need to be elevated with a browlift which can improve the position and contour of the eyelids.
Our WAVE Plastic Surgeons have extensive knowledge and expertise on the intricacies of facial anatomy and can determine the correct surgical techniques and procedures to meet your individual needs. An upper blepharoplasty can help improve the natural contour of the upper eyelids, making your facial appearance overall more youthful and rested.

Who is a Good Candidate for Upper Eyelid Surgery?
Good candidates for upper blepharoplasty should be in general good health, nonsmokers, and without serious eye conditions. Upper blepharoplasty can help reverse the signs of aging and restore a refreshed, youthful appearance to your eyelids.
Some of these changes include:
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and light sedation and generally takes about one hour to complete. During the procedure, you will remain comfortable, but will be awake enough for our surgeons to evaluate your eyelids in the open and closed position to ensure symmetry and desired contour.
An incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid to minimize scarring. Excess skin and fat are removed and inner eye muscles can be tightened if necessary to improve the contour of the eyelids. Very fine sutures are used to meticulously close the incisions and are removed in one week.
In general, upper blepharoplasty surgery is well tolerated. Most patients have minimal discomfort and can be treated with mild pain medication. Some swelling and bruising will occur after surgery, but can be minimized with proper rest, cool compresses, keeping your head elevated, and avoiding salty foods. Recovery time varies based on individual overall health and the specific treatment performed. Average recovery period ranges from 10-14 days.
After an upper blepharoplasty, the eyelids will appear smoother with a more defined upper eyelid contour. Results will continue to improve over time as the swelling resolves.
The longevity of the results varies with each individual, but on average can last around 7-10 years. The process of aging does not cease after surgery, so additional touch up surgery may be needed in the future to maintain your results.

Frequently Asked Questions About Eyelid Surgery
The eyelid surgery is ambulatory, so patients return home the day of the surgery. After 5 days, the sutures are removed, and any swelling will quickly subside. The swelling usually dissipates completely 2 weeks after the Blepharoplasty. Patients typically return to work a week after the surgery.
The average price for eyelid surgery, or Blepharoplasty, is around $4,000 for upper eyelid surgery and $5,000 for lower eyelid surgery. Most Plastic Surgeons will bundle upper and lower eyelid surgery for a discounted price.
Dark circles or “bags” under the eyes are treated with lower eyelid surgery if they are the result of shadowing due to bulging or fat or sagging skin. If the dark circles are the result of pigmentation changes, skin lightening creams or light chemical peels may be able to treat the issue.
The development of wrinkles around the eyes is a natural part of aging. Over time, the skin around the eyes becomes less elastic, which causes the eyelids to droop. Once this process begins, a person may start tensing their forehead muscles to lift their drooping eyelids. This can cause headaches and fatigue. If you are experiencing these symptoms, or want a more youthful, energetic look, you may be a good candidate for a blepharoplasty.
Eyelid surgery typically begins with local anesthesia to numb the area, along with light intravenous sedation. Patients remain awake, but stay comfortable and do not experience any pain during the procedure. After any surgical procedure, some discomfort can be expected. All patients are provided with prescriptions for pain medication. Patients typically have very mild discomfort after their eyelid procedures.
Eyelid skin is the thinnest skin on the body. As such, it heals more quickly than any other skin on the body. The incisions made during an eye lift procedure are made along the eye’s natural creases. These incisions will heal quickly and be almost imperceptible and are typically only visible when the eyes are closed.
Blepharoplasty is a relatively quick and non-invasive cosmetic procedure. A plastic surgeon can perform the upper Blepharoplasty in an hour and the lower Blepharoplasty in another hour.
