What is thread lifting and how does it work?
Although first developed in the 1980s, thread lifting has since evolved with new advances in technology and quality of threads, leading to a resurgence in popularity as a minimally invasive rejuvenation procedure. Thread lifting can be considered a “bridge” between the two ends of the treatment spectrum, offering an exciting option for patients who want more than noninvasive fillers but are not quite ready for surgery yet.
At WAVE Plastic Surgery, we use safe, FDA approved threads made of polydioxanone (PDO) which is a safe, absorbable synthetic polymer that has been long used as a suture material for cardiac surgery.
What to Expect from a Thread Lift
Who would benefit from thread lifting?
During the aging process, weakened structural support and loss of fat from our face leads to sagging and laxity of tissue. Thread lifting can help address the signs of aging by lifting and repositioning tissue to its ideal anatomical location.
Patients who can benefit from thread lifting include: minimal to moderate sagging often in their mid-thirties to fifties, adjunctive procedure to enhance other nonsurgical and surgical rejuvenation treatment, previous surgical patients who need additional lifting. Patients with severe laxity are likely better candidates for a surgical facelift.

Thread Lifts Available For You
New Lift is a non-surgical procedure that uses NovaThread dissolvable threads that are injected into the dermis to stimulate collagen and lift underlying tissue.
For those interested in returning to a youthful, healthy appearance, New Lift at WAVE offers patients results similar to a traditional face and neck lift with no incisions, no scars and no downtime.
The signs of aging happen to everyone, and the face is often one of the first places to show them. Looking younger is easier than you might think, thanks to an innovative procedure called the Flash Lift.
Exclusively available at WAVE Plastic Surgery, the Flash Lift allows patients to receive all the benefits of a facelift without the surgery.
Unlike a facelift, the Flash Lift offers no scarring, no operating room or general anesthesia required, amazing results that are seen almost instantly.
Thread Lifting is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. The face is cleansed and the provider will design the placement of threads based on your individual needs.
Some local anesthesia is given to numb the area being treated, ensuring maximal comfort during the procedure.
The threads are precisely inserted under the skin and barbs on the threads fully engage with surrounding tissue to provide a maximal lifting effect. The threads are then cut at the insertion point and will remain under the skin for up to 6 months. Slowly dissolving over time, the threads stimulate collagen formation that helps maintain the structure and contour effects for 1-2 years.
After the procedure, patients will immediately see improved contour and lifting effects. Results typically last about 12-18 months, depending on the level of laxity, skin type, and area treated. Aging is a complex, multiplanar phenomenon, one that involves structural and volume changes at the skeletal, soft tissue, and skin level.
For this reason, different treatments can be used to address specific issues that collectively enhance and optimize results. Studies have shown thread lifting combined with other rejuvenation procedures, both nonsurgical or surgical, lead to better outcomes and higher patient satisfaction rates.
Patients tolerate thread lifting well. Mild swelling and bruising may occur after the procedure that should resolve within 3-5 days. Cool compresses and head elevation when sleeping can help minimize swelling during recovery.
Other potential side effects include mild discomfort, uneven contour, and rarely suture granuloma which may need revision. Patients should avoid dental procedures for one month to avoid wide mouth opening or stretching.
