Surgical vaginal tightening is a procedure that is performed to tighten the vaginal canal and surrounding tissues. It is also known as vaginal rejuvenation or vaginoplasty.  Vaginal tightening can be necessary to reverse the effects of pregnancy, menopause, aging, or simply genetics. While there are many non-surgical options for vaginal tightening, surgical vaginal tightening is a more permanent solution for those who are looking for immediate and long-lasting results.

Surgical vaginal rejuvenation is a highly specialized and delicate procedure that requires expertise and precision.  If you are considering this procedure, it is important to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon. With the right preparation and care, surgical vaginal rejuvenation can be a life-changing experience.

What is Surgical Vaginal Tightening?

Vaginal tightening is the surgical procedure used to repair of the vaginal opening and the inside of the vagina.  Some women are concerned that the vaginal opening is too large, and they no longer have the same sensations that they used to have during intercourse.

The reasons for this problem can include:

Childbirth

Childbirth is the number one reason people seek out a vaginal tightening procedure. Childbirth can result in the formation of Episiotomies (cuts sometimes made by the baby’s head) are repaired following the birth.  However, sometimes the repair is less than satisfactory in that the tissues do not come together completely, leaving a wider opening than before the delivery. There can be extensive tearing during a delivery, and this can lead to a vaginal opening and interior much larger than before.

Weight Gain/Weight Loss

Weight gain and weight loss can change the size of the vaginal interior, which can affect sensation during intercourse.  After rapid weight loss a person’s skin and tissues can lose elasticity.  As with other parts of the body, the vagina undergoes a similar change.  This is caused by a loss of collagen in the skin. A change in the skin’s elasticity can affect the vaginal and surrounding labial tissues, which can lead to decreased tightness, loss of sensation, and even urinary incontinence.

Aging

During the body’s natural aging process, it is normal to experience sagging skin as a result of collagen loss.  Many women begin to see a change in their vagina’s elasticity starting in their forties as their estrogen levels begin to drop during the perimenopausal stage and become more prevalent during menopause.

Sexual Partner

In some cases, a change in sexual partners may lead to a desire to reconstruct the vagina to be either larger or smaller to accommodate a new partner.

The Difference Between Vaginal Tightening & Labiaplasty

Vaginal Tightening (or Vaginoplasty) and labiaplasty are both surgical procedures that are performed on the female genitalia, but they differ in their goals and the specific parts of the genitalia that they target.

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that is done to tighten or reconstruct the vagina. It is typically performed on women who have experienced significant stretching or damage to the vaginal muscles, often as a result of childbirth or other medical conditions. The procedure involves removing excess tissue and tightening the vaginal muscles to improve the strength and tone of the vagina.

Labiaplasty, on the other hand, is a surgical procedure that is done to alter the appearance of the labia minora, which are the inner folds of skin that surround the vaginal opening. The goal of the procedure is to reduce the size or reshape the labia minora for cosmetic reasons or to alleviate discomfort caused by excessively large or asymmetrical labia.

In summary, vaginoplasty is a procedure that focuses on the vaginal canal and is performed to improve vaginal function and tighten the vaginal muscles, while labiaplasty focuses on the external genitalia and is performed to alter the appearance of the labia minora for cosmetic or functional reasons.

WAVE Plastic surgery offers both Vaginoplasty and labiaplasty procedures.  To learn more about Labiaplasty, please visit our Labiaplasty Page.

The Vaginal Tightening Process

Vaginal tightening is the surgical procedure used to repair of the vaginal opening and the inside of the vagina.  Some women are concerned that the vaginal opening is too large, and they no longer have the same sensations that they used to have during intercourse.

Preoperative Evaluation

A preoperative evaluation is required prior to all surgical procedures.  This involves a complete Medical history and Physical exam. A number of issues will be determined at that time. These include the degree of prior vaginal trauma and the type of repair required to achieve the desired results.

All Lab work and reports will be sent to the surgeon for review prior to the meeting. Should a review of these reports indicate that there is a problem, the surgical team will discuss their concerns and formulate a plan with the involvement of the private Physician.  This avoids an unnecessary trip prior to a problem being corrected.  The need for use of a Laser for this procedure will be determined at this time.

Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery, the patient will arrive at the Surgical Center approximately one hour prior to their scheduled procedure.  Our Board Certified Anesthesiologists will discuss the types of anesthesia available and if the patient has any allergies. An IV will be started, and once the patient is under anesthesia, they will be taken to the operating room.

The Operation

The Vagial Tightening procedure consists of incisions being made in the vaginal opening and the inside of the vagina. Of course, the patient will be asleep throughout the entire procedure.  Incisions will be made at the bottom of the vaginal opening and along the bottom of the vaginal floor.

Assuming that the plan is to make the opening smaller, the tissues are dissected free from any scar tissue that may be present from prior vaginal trauma such as childbirth. The Hymenal ring is identified and reconstructed so that it is approximately the same as prior to first intercourse. Some women request this, and some do not. This is a decision made at the time of my preoperative exam.

The vaginal floor is then reconstructed by bringing together the existing tissues making the vaginal interior smaller.  The opening is then reconstructed by removing old scar tissue, if present, and then creating a smaller vaginal opening. When completed and healed, the vaginal opening and interior will appear entirely normal. All tissues are brought together in a plastic closure so that it is virtually impossible to see that any surgery has been performed.

Recovery & Post-Operative Care

Following surgery, the patient will be monitored for about one to one and a half hours.  There will be no bandages to change or tubes in the bladder.  Pain medication will be given in the recovery room if needed. However, this is not typically necessary immediately after surgery as the surgeon will the patient pain medication prior to them waking up from Anesthesia.

At discharge, non-narcotic oral pain medication is given to the patient.  Patients typically have no problems urinating after the procedure.  If the patient begins their menstrual cycle, tampons should be avoided until approximately 3-4 weeks after surgery.

We recommend daily showering. However, taking baths should be avoided for about two weeks.  Full sexual function may be resumed approximately 3-4 weeks after the surgery
