Breast Lifts vs Breast Implants

The Different Types of Breast Augmentation

It’s 2021: There should be no shame surrounding plastic surgery. That includes breast augmentation.

What I bet you didn’t know is that there are many different types of breast augmentations. Through this article, we hope to inform you of the different types of procedures, and which may be the best fit for you.

What is the Difference Between Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift?

Breast augmentation and breast lifts are actually different procedures. They both change the shape of the breast but go about it in different ways.

Wave Plastic Surgery provides a variety of plastic surgeries focused on the breasts, and this article’s intention is to inform you of the varying options available.

With a breast lift, there is no size or filling added to the breast. Instead, it’s a simple lift of the breast tissue. In the procedure, sagging breast tissue is lifted and tightened to make the breast seem firmer and perkier.

Breast becoming a bit saggier is natural, and often time comes with age. The elasticity in your breast weakens. Another reason the breast skin may lose its elasticity is because of pregnancy and breastfeeding.

A breast lift can help restore a more youthful look.

Breast augmentation, however, is the process of making the breast look fuller. The various implants go under the breast tissue. Most commonly, breast implants are made of saline or silicone.

Over the years, however, there have been many other implant materials created. Implants are very safe. Silicone implants create a natural look and feel. Saline carries a risk of rupturing, though this is uncommon.

Both breast lifts and breast augmentation procedures are performed in outpatient surgical facilities.

Different Types of Breast Augmentations and Implants

We already mentioned that saline and silicone breast implants are the most common, but there are specific surgeries for each.

There is a saline breast implant as well as a structured saline breast implant.

A structured saline breast implant has a filling of sterile alien water and an inner structure. The added structure helps make the saline implant feel more natural.

For a silicone breast implant, a patient should expect their breast to be filled with silicone gel. This gel has a similar feeling to natural breast tissue.

A silicone implant can leak. The filling will either stay in the implant shell or it may make it to the breast implant pocket. If for some reason there is a leak, the implant will not collapse.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

A pair of breasts can still grow into a woman’s late teens or early twenties. The FDA has a law that women under eighteen cannot receive a breast implant.

Women over eighteen can receive saline-filled implants and women twenty-two or older are eligible to receive saline implants.

Before the procedure is performed, you will meet with your surgeon and be medically evaluated. This is the time to talk to the surgeon about your hopes for the procedure as well as receive feedback from them.

The surgery is fairly simple and will only take an hour or two. Most patients receive anesthesia to ensure that the operation is free of pain.

During the procedure, a cut will be made either under your breast, arms or possibly around your nipples — this all depends on your body type and the intended outcome of the surgery.

Once the incision is made, the surgeon will place the breast implant into a pocket in the chest muscle. The incision will be mended with either surgical tape or sutures.

The recovery is fairly simple. It requires just a few days of taking it easy, such as not lifting heavy things or exercising aggressively.

Easily manage the pain with over-the-counter medication, or your doctor may prescribe you something smaller.

Breast Lift Procedure

The medical jargon for a breast lift is also called, “mastopexy.” The general purpose of a breast lift surgery is to change the shape of the breasts.

During the procedure, extra skin in the breast is removed and the breast tissue is reshaped to make the breasts perkier.

In addition to reducing the sagginess of the breast, the nipples may undergo re-figuration or reduction to match and keep them in proportion to the new shape of the breasts.

Incisions for a breast lift, according to Mayo Clinic, are either made:

  • around the areolae— the darker area surrounding the nipples
  • Extending downward from the areolae to the breast creases
  • Horizontally along the breast creases

The procedure includes the nipples being shifted into a higher, perkier position as well as the removal of extra skin in the breasts.

The surgery at most will be three hours, allowing the patient to go home within the same day.

After the surgery, the changes made will be immediate and noticeable. For a breast lift surgery, your bra size may even go down, this just means that your breasts are far more firm and round than they were before the procedure.

Boosting Your Confidence With a Breast Augmentation

A breast augmentation surgery will help to boost your confidence — making it worth every penny.

A survey conducted by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery even reported that a woman with confidence can experience greater and more enhanced sexual pleasure.

So, there are definitely perks (excuse the pun) to getting plastic surgery on your breasts.
