What is a Double Eyelid?

Do you know what type of eyelid you have?

There are two different types of eyelids; the mono eyelid and the double eyelid. Mono eyelids (also known as monolids) are most common on people with Asian heritage, while most other heritages have double eyelids – and both are beautiful!

But, while you might have heard a lot about the double and monolid, you might not know exactly what they are. They’re just eyelids, right? What could be so different?

To help you out, we’ve put together a guide of everything you need to know.

What is a Double Eyelid?

Double eyelids aren’t as scary as they might sound. No, it doesn’t mean you have twice as many eyelids as you need! The term double eyelid actually applies to eyelids that have a fold or crease.

Wondering are double eyelids rare? Most caucasian people have double eyelids, but the Asian double eyelid is also quite common more common than people think. In fact, Vice has reported that half of all Southeast and East Asian women have double eyelids naturally. That’s a lot more than people think!

What Is a Monolid?

A monolid is slightly different from a double eyelid. While they’re not hugely different, you can usually tell the difference between the two pretty easily. Where the double eyelid has a crease or fold, the monolid doesn’t.

This gives a more flat appearance from the eyebrow to the eye. The eye has less of a hood than double eyelids, and the eyes can appear smaller as the skin covers more of the eyeball.

The Trouble with Eyelids

The double eyelid is often held up as the typical standard of beauty. While this definitely shouldn’t be the case and we should all fight to change these silly standards, it can cause a lot of insecurity! If you’re not brought up to believe that your eyelids are beautiful, it can be hard to think otherwise.

While both eyelid types are totally normal, if you’re insecure about yours it can be horrible. You might lack confidence, feel self-conscious, and not enjoy looking at yourself too much.

While double eyelids shouldn’t be held up as the beauty standard, it’s also not easy to make insecurities go away on their own. If you’re really struggling with the appearance of your eyelids and it’s affecting your life, you can get surgery to change them.

Eyelid Plastic Surgery

Double eyelid surgery is a form of blepharoplasty, which is the industry term for any cosmetic surgery involving eyelids. If you have monolids, you can have blepharoplasty done to turn them into double lids, helping you feel more comfortable and confident in your appearance. It’s actually one of the most common procedures around today and is popular across the world!

There are two different methods of eyelid surgery you can opt for. The first is incision surgery. This method involves making incisions in the eyelids, removing the necessary fat and muscle, and securing the remaining muscle and skin to fix the shape.

The second is the suture method. This works by creating small sutures that connect the upper eyelid muscle to the upper eyelid skin. Scar tissue then forms in this area and eventually creates that double eyelid crease.

Both options are permanent, fairly simple procedures with natural results and very few side-effects. Just be prepared for a little bit of downtime as your eyes recover from the surgery!

The Benefits of Surgery

There are more benefits to this type of surgery than a boost in confidence! Alongside helping you banish your insecurities, the surgery actually has a whole range of advantages you can look forward to.

Take a peep at a few of them here.

Easier Makeup Application

A lot of people who make the switch from monolids to double eyelids say that applying makeup becomes much less of a hassle! Your early mornings could become much easier after the procedure. Say goodbye to smudgy mascara and eyeshadow with double lids.

A Natural Result

If you’re not a big fan of the plastic surgery look, you don’t need to worry about eyelid surgery. The results are incredibly natural and it’d be extremely difficult for a stranger to spot you’ve had surgery once your lids have healed.

Look More Awake

Because monolids tend to be heavier and droop lower over the eyes, by having surgery to change to double lids you could find you look more awake. That sleepy puffiness that’s common with monolids should be dramatically reduced.

If you’re sick of slathering brightening creams and concealer around your eyes to look energized, this could be the answer!

Look More Youthful

Looking more awake isn’t the only benefit of removing skin from around your eyes; you might also look younger. This is because larger eyes are often associated with a more youthful look.

By removing the heavy lid, you can reveal more of your eyes and turn back time on your face.

Are Double Eyelids the Lids for You?

If double eyelids have always been your dream and you think it could really boost your confidence, we say go for it! At the end of the day, your happiness is the most important thing, and if changing your eyelids could improve that then embrace the change.
